A thorough assessment of potential flight area conditions and hazards is key to the safe execution of any sUAS flight. A well thought out plan can help avoid many common pitfalls and make the overall workflow more efficient. Once the overall goals and data collection requirements are understood, the planning can begin.
The on-site assessment is conducted in the field just prior to flight so that any hazards in the area can be evaluated by person, the takeoff/landing points can be adjusted if necessary, and any changes to the weather can be re-evaluated. The planned route of flight, altitude, and failsafe settings cannot be finalized until all obstructions are area hazards have been identified.
The Pilot in Command shall ensure that all crewmembers are given a safety briefing appropriate to the crewmember needs. As a minimum, the briefings should address each flight uniquely considering the area of flight, condition of aircraft, crew roles and responsibilities, obstructions/obstacles/hazards, airspace considerations, weather highlights, and immediate action response in case of emergency.
During the takeoff portion of the flight, the flight team will maintain a sterile cockpit policy where no-one speaks during the takeoff procedure (unless directly related to the takeoff event). During the landing portion of the flight, the flight team will maintain a sterile cockpit policy where no-one speaks during the landing procedure (unless directly related to the landing event). The PIC will land the aircraft at the takeoff point unless, due to safety, he/she feels it would be safer to land at a different location.
